I'm wondering if there's a way to do this without the two strands getting so tangled in each other, any tips would be great!

When you're switching between the colours, I like to always make sure I'm 'dropping' the spare strand in the same direction i.e. always dropping the blue strand to the back or always dropping the pink strand towards the front - and then that makes sure they're not spinning round each other!
